Lauren Harper, Proposal Lead at Maritime Developments Limited, joined the AXIS Mentoring Scheme at a stage in her career when she was seeking greater clarity on her professional development and looking to expand her network within the wider energy industry.

Working across Sales, Business Development, and project delivery teams, Lauren develops commercial proposals and client solutions, with a current focus on growth across the Americas, including Canada and South America. While progressing in her career, she recognised the value of gaining insight from experienced professionals outside her organisation.

Through the mentoring scheme, Lauren was paired with a mentor, whose guidance proved invaluable. Their discussions covered a range of professional challenges, including navigating difficult conversations, communicating effectively and approaching workplace situations with confidence and diplomacy.

Reflecting on the experience, Lauren highlights the importance of having access to honest, unbiased advice from someone outside her immediate working environment. The mentoring relationship encouraged her to think differently, challenge self-imposed limitations and take a more proactive approach to her career development.

One of the most significant outcomes of the programme was an increased belief in her own capabilities. Through her mentor’s encouragement, Lauren recognised that she was ready to take on greater responsibility and pursue opportunities aligned with her ambitions. Since participating in the scheme, she has moved organisations twice, carrying forward valuable experience and lessons learned from each role to support her continued professional growth.

Lauren believes the AXIS Mentoring Scheme delivers benefits that extend beyond individual participants. By fostering knowledge sharing, collaboration and professional development, the programme helps strengthen the wider energy community while supporting the next generation of industry leaders.

Her advice to anyone considering joining the scheme is simple: approach the experience with an open mind, be honest about your goals and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. The more effort invested in the mentoring relationship, the greater the rewards.

For Lauren, the value of the AXIS Mentoring Scheme can be summed up in one sentence:

"The AXIS Mentoring Scheme is an invaluable opportunity to build confidence, gain fresh perspectives, and develop meaningful connections that support both personal and professional growth."
